Congress And Consumers Caution Against Cloning
When you receive the Seal you will begin to take care of your health. Concerns about health are among those causing congress to ask the Food and Drug Administration not to allow cloned meat and milk until more studies prove they are safe.
US Representative Rosa De Lauro wrote a letter to the FDA commissioner asking him to postpone allowing cloned animal products on the market. She said there is not enough information showing such products are safe.
She is the chairperson of the House appropriations committee (so she oversees the FDA) and spoke for the Senate Agricultural Appropriations committee as well as that of the house.
She asked for additional studies to be done before acting further on the issue. It was mentioned in a bill the House passed the week before Christmas 2007 for government spending for the coming months, and also in a similar Senate bill the week before.
Food products made from cloned animals currently can not be sold in the United States. It is controversial and has ethical problems attached to it. Add to that the products have no labeling requirements so consumers would not be able to choose to avoid them.
And there is public outcry. A Pew Initiative poll in 2006 reported that 64 percent of Americans did not like the idea of cloning. Many consumer watch groups are protesting the decision of the FDA to approve cloned meat and milk for consumption.
At this point, just before Christmas 2007, the FDA has not approved the cloned products yet, but is prepared to approve them, perhaps within days. The FDA says cloned animals are scientifically identical to their "parent" animals.
Cloning is taking adult cells and fusing them in an egg which is then implanted as fertilized. It is similar to natural fertilization, but of course, not the same. It is not truly natural.
Natural is how God created you. Natural is the way God caused reproduction to happen. And the beauty of natural reproduction is it happens in addition to God's efforts to create the world.
When you reproduce you help God create life. You create life along with Him. As long as you do it naturally, the way He created reproduction itself. But cloning is not natural and not what God gave you to create life either.
Cloned animals are not much of a threat to your dinner table, at least not yet. The cloned animals are outrageously expensive and are typically copies of cattle famous for their genetics.
Only several hundred animals have been cloned so far and few of them that are cloned now will ever be sold for meat. They are sold for their genetic heritage, as copies of animals with desirable qualities.
But that means they will be used to breed a lot of young. And if there is anything about cloning that can compromise your health it will be discovered eventually. Many consumers and some in the government are saying, "Discover it now while you have the chance."
When you receive the Seal God creates you anew. But He does not clone you out of any other people. You do become more like someone--you become more like God Himself.
But the popularity of cloning those with desirable characteristics has considerable ethical drawbacks. It encourages the rejection of those with "imperfections" in the eye of the beholder.
When you are sealed God accepts you in spite of some imperfections. So you will learn to accept other people (and animals) who have whatever can be considered "imperfections" when you receive the Seal.
