Goodbye Animal Testing - Hello Health By Biochips

When you receive the Seal you will begin to care both about your health and about the environment. A new technology promises that a lot of animal testing can be eliminated and at the same time make it much cheaper for new drugs to come to market.

The new technology involves biochips, the MetaChip and the DataChip. These biochips act just like the body act when it takes a drug. They will be able to show whether there are any toxic side-effects of taking the drug. As high as 70 percent of new drugs being developed have to be scrapped because they are toxic to the body. But this is not discovered until after each drug cost hundreds of millions of dollars in research money.

These biochips promise to eliminate all that wasted cost in drug development. And they promise to eliminate much of the unethical experimenting currently done on animals. The European Union has banned all such testing on animals and that is set to begin in 2009. At that time there will be quite a market opened up for the biochips.

The biochips are glass slides dotted with tiny droplets of enzymes from the human body. The MetaChip has liver enzymes. It can show whether a drug is toxic to the liver. The DataChip contains enzymes from the bladder or kidney as well as the liver. Those can also be tested for toxicity. And if there is any toxicity it will be found much earlier in the drug trial process, saving huge amounts of money.

Animal testing is not just unethical. Its accuracy is also dubious. There is always a question of whether humans will have the same reaction animals have. It can give a general idea, but nothing specific enough.

The biochips show how humans will react. And yet what is being developed now is still not specific enough of testing. The researchers have big dreams for biochips, including "personalized" testing. In the future, every sick person can have his or her own biochips made from enzymes from his or her body. That way drugs can be tested for their reaction with that individual person, not for all people in general.

This heralds and important development in medicine--the "personalization" of medical treatment. In the future drugs can be chosen and even developed for individuals or smaller, more specific groups of people. Drugs currently are developed for everyone and anyone. And that is not good. People vary widely in their genetics and predispositions to disease. Their chemical make-ups are different. So why not treat them differently, since they are different?

That is what this new technology promises, although we are not there yet. This is only the beginning. Another dream researchers have is the dream of including more organs in the biochips. In the future all the organs can be tested, including the heart, the brain, and the skin. This will give a more holistic picture of the reaction of the body of a person to a particular drug.

When you are sealed you will begin to notice your health and the environment too. God will show you how to both extend your life and take care so you do not destroy the earth when you receive the Seal.

Are These Facts Or Shark Tales?

The term shark itself is the source of several questions that pop into your head. Many people are not sure if some statements are based on facts about sharks or simply some common shark tales. Which is why the main question that is usually on peoples mind is: Are these facts or shark tales?

Lets find out about common shark tales that are surrounding some popular shark tales. For example, one shark tale is saying that all sharks must swim to breath and stay alive. In fact, while this statement is partly true as most shark species do need to keep swimming to be able to breathe and avoid drowning. Some species such as lemon, nurse and bull sharks can rest at the bottom of the ocean and keep breathing by opening and closing their mouth and filter the water through their gills.

Another one of the shark tales is the statement that all sharks are potentially harmful to humans. In fact, of the 350 shark species, 80 percent of them are either incapable of harming humans or unlikely to ever being in contact with them.

A third one of these shark tales is the statement that all sharks eat anything. In fact while some species will eat just about anything like in the case of the tiger shark which will even eat license plates, canned goods and even shoes, most shark species will in fact prefer to eat fish, mollusks and crustaceans.

The fourth statement that is part of the shark tales is the one stating that the larger the shark, the larger the prey. The fact is that the two largest sharks are in fact consuming the smallest prey which is plankton. These sharks are known as the basking shark and the whale shark.

Some people also believe one of the shark tales being that sharks need to bite their prey sideways. The fact is that a shark can attack its prey from any angle. Since their unique jaws can even protrude beyond their snout, sharks can catch a prey that is in front of them.

A common statement made amongst shark tales is the one saying that sharks eat each other in the womb. Well, in the case of the sand tigers, one shark in each oviduct will feed on its weaker siblings until birth but it is not the case in most shark species.

Amongst shark tales, you also find the belief that sharks only have five senses like us to find a prey which are: sight, hearing, smell, taste and touch. In fact, sharks can also use two other ways to detect a prey. They can feel their electric field as well as the vibrations linked to their movements.

While several merchants are selling shark cartilage pills and the belief that they can prevent and cure cancer, these beliefs are considered shark tales as there is no proof as of now that these pills have these properties. These affirmations are mainly based on the fact that no sharks so far have been showing signs of cancerous tumors but nonetheless, it is not a proof that they are immune to cancer.

It is the common belief that a sharks eyesight is very poor. In fact, it is quite the opposite as the lenses in their eyes are 7 times more powerful than the human eye. Some species can even see a light 10 times dimmer than the dimmest light perceived by the average human eye.

Finally, the last one of the shark tales that I will share with you is the one stating that if you must fend off a shark, punch it in the snout as hard as possible. Well, the experts actually advise you against such action. While this technique proved to be lucky for a few, it will mostly make the shark more aggressive. It is highly recommended to use a stick or a tool instead of your hands and poke the shark in the eyes or in the gills.

My name is Sylvie Leochko. I have noticed through the years, that since the appearance of Jaws on the silver screen, people have been given pretty bad advice that is based on shark tales instead of facts about sharks. Such advice could be deadly if used during a shark attack. If you wish to learn more about shark tales, I recommend that you visit this main page: http://sharks.findoutnow.org/shark-tales.html

Deep Inside the Costa Rican Rainforest

In spite of its small size, Costa Rica features greater biodiversity than Europe or North America. This is due to a number of factors, including the country's location between North and South America, enabling plants and animals from both continents and the Caribbean islands to establish themselves there, and the nation's ecological policy, which has protected a significant percentage of its natural territory.

Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve is located in Puntarenas Province, and is one of the most popular areas for wildlife viewing in the country. Mist shrouded trees laden with vines and mosses stretch into a thick forest canopy covering thousands of acres, perpetually blanketed by clouds. The area is home to more than 100 species of mammals, 120 species of reptiles and amphibians, and over 2500 species of plants. Flower lovers will find over 420 different kinds of orchids, and exotic creatures roam the lush forest, including jaguars, pumas, monkeys, ocelots, and the rare resplendent quetzal.

One of the best ways to really explore the forest is to take a skywalk or canopy tour, where visitors can view the forest and its inhabitants from a series of bridges and cables that offer a bird's eye view of the reserve below. This activity is not for the weak at heart, but is well worth it, and definitely an experience to remember. A bird lover's paradise, the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve is a wonderful place for bird watching, especially between the months of February and May, when many birds nest and migrate to the reserve. Home of the ornate quetzals, plus a number of hummingbird species, early mornings and late afternoons are the best times to see these beautiful creatures. The quetzal is one of the most prized species for bird watchers who come to Costa Rica, with tail plumes up to 24 inches long. The bird's coloring is truly amazing, a vivid green that bursts into flame in direct sunlight, changing from emerald, to golden, to iridescent green.

Of course Monteverde is not the only place in Costa Rica to experience the wonders of the wild. The country is blessed with numerous national parks, wildlife reserves, and protected areas, all very welcoming to visitors and full of incredible wildlife. Tortuguero National Park is located 82 km west of Puerto Limon, and has many coastal beaches for nesting turtles, and is a great place to spot manatees. Canals through the rain forest support vast numbers of birds and butterflies, and monkeys, sloths, anteaters, and over 60 species of amphibians can be seen here.

Just slightly to the north, Barra del Colorado National Wildlife Refuge lies between Tortuguero and the Nicaraguan border, and covers over 92,000 hectares. Largely formed by the San Juan River, the refuge is home to a wide range of birds, monkeys and sloths, and offers excellent sport-fishing.

Across to the west, 36 km north of Liberia, is Guanacaste National Park. The park was created in 1989 to connect neighboring Santa Rosa National Park with the high elevation cloud forest of the Orosi and Cacao volcanoes, and across the continental divide to the Caribbean rainforest of Northern Costa Rica. The hope is that together these two parks protect enough land to ensure sufficiently large habitats for wide-ranging species such as jaguars and mountain lions, while simultaneously creating a biological corridor for birds and insects to make local seasonal migrations between the dry forest and the evergreen cloud and rain forests. Visitors can see over 300 different bird species, 5000 types of butterflies and moths, and 3000 species of epiphytes, and take advantage of three biological stations that offer trails.

Meanwhile Corcovado National Park is located on the Pacific coast of Costa Rica, on the southwest side of the Osa Peninsula. Corcovado is the last significant virgin rain forest in Central America, and is home to a wide range of endangered species such as the jaguar, tapir, poison dart frogs and puma. It also boasts a magnificent collection of birds, mammals, amphibians, reptiles and butterflies.

For any nature lover fortunate enough to visit Costa Rica, there is a huge variety of animal and plant life to be found within each and every national park, wildlife refuge or protected area. Regardless of the region, visitors will be amazed and delighted with the staggering variety of incredible wildlife that can be photographed and appreciated. Viewing wildlife is such a large part of Costa Rica's appeal, that it can either be incorporated into a beach or family vacation, or enjoyed independently. Either way, this fascinating aspect of the country of Costa Rica should not be missed.

Fun Science Project With Fruit

Great and easy science project by creating a battery from a lemon.

Many people have heard of this, but do you know how to do this. It is actually quite easy. Any range of students can do this as a science fair experiment, however, young students will need to have their parents assistance to understand and perform the project correctly.

Here are the materials you will need.

4 lemons

4 pennies

4 galvanized nails

A Volt Meter

An Led Light bulb with two wires protruding from the bottom

A small knife

4 Small alligator clips from an electronics store such as Radio Shack

First we will make a battery with one of the fruit. Insert one of the nails in an end of a lemon and then cut a small slit with the knife in the other end big enough for a coin and insert the penny half way into the fruit. The galvanized nail with the acid in the lemon and the copper in the penny has now created a battery.

To test this use the volt meter and hold the positive end which is the red wire on the penny and the negative or black wire on the nail. It should read at least about one.

Now switch the red and black wires and you should see a negative result number on the reading.

Now remove this and create 3 more lemon batteries. Using the alligator clips attach the 4 piece of fruit together. You will connect a penny on one lemon to a nail on another and do that with the other two lemons. Now attach a clip to the remaining nail and the positive end wire of the LED light. The LED light has a flat edge by a wire. This should always be the negative side. Now clip remaining penny on another lemon and just touch the other wire of the LED light with the clip end. You should see a slight light. If you do not you may have hooked it up incorrectly so switch sides with the wires from the LED light and see if it works.

You will be able to present this project demonstration at your science fair.
